Aromatherapy
What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is a holistic practice that includes the use of essential oils from plants for healing. The oils can be used by either inhalation or topically as an alternative treatment for infections, stress, and other health problems.
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants. Each oil contains a mix of active ingredients, which determines the use of the oil. Some oils are used to promote physical healing, which is usually applied topically. For example, to treat swelling or fungal infections. Others are used to help with mental wellness, which is usually used through inhalation. They may enhance relaxation or make a room smell pleasant. For example, citrus scents contain a large amount of an active ingredient that is thought to be uplifting and motivating.
How Does Aromatherapy Work?
When one inhales a scent, the scent molecules go through the nasal cavity which stimulates the olfactory bulb and then reaches our limbic system where our memories are stored, subsequently causing a response from the body. These responses can cause a person to relax, brighten, or heal. When used topically, the oils are combined with a carrier oil which allows the oil to seep into the pores of your skin and carries the oil to where the body needs it the most. For example, ginger is fantastic for our stomach, so the stomach would absorb the oil being absorbed through the skin.
